Beattie-Powers Place is Catskill's historic home for the arts. With Meet the Makers, we're considering how that mission relates to different types of arts produced in the area. We want to give back to the community, educate about some of the amazing things that are happening locally, and encourage support of our small-scale makers!

For millennia, fermentation has been used to create foods such as alcohol, pickles and sourdough. In recent years, there has been increased interest in fermentation as a way to break away from mass production, enhance taste and improve health. During the pandemic, many have been experimenting with these techniques at home, further swelling the ranks of the ferment-curious.

For this event, we’ll be talking about the fermentation arts, its processes and how small Hudson Valley makers are working with ferments locally, carrying on these ancient traditions. We will have a panel discussion with local experts in the fermentation arts: Sourdough makers See and Be Kitchen, cider makers Left Bank Ciders and Ayurvedic fermented food makers Atina Foods. We will especially be learning about those techniques, but
